9/11

On the one-year anniversary of 9/11, Yorba Linda had a community-wide ceremony.  It was put together by our inter-faith council and a lot of churches plus a Muslim group and our local synagogue participated.  It was a walk down the length of Yorba Linda Blvd., beginning at the Catholic Church at one end and ending at the Baptist Church at the other.  People walked, sang, and carried candles, and there was prayer at each stop along the road.  Hundreds, maybe thousands of people went.  It was very moving.

But that was seven years ago.  In the intervening years, some bad stuff has happened in peaceful little old Yorba Linda.  Some white junior high kids ganged up and beat a Middle Eastern kid senseless at the skateboard park one night.  Elsewhere in Orange County, some Muslim organizations' buildings have been defaced.  Anti-Muslim propaganda circulates regularly on the Internet.  Perfectly sensible, otherwise intelligent people are thoroughly convinced that Barack Obama is some kind of secret Muslim terrorist.  Many otherwise intelligent people believe that ALL Muslims are terrorists.  People who would never dream of unleashing hateful rants about, say, Catholics or Jews feel absolutely entitled to spew violent anti-Muslim vitriol. It's starting to frighten me.  It needs to stop.

It's time to leave 9/11 in our past.  Our world is too small and too crowded to keep crowing over tragedies that are in the past, things that cause hostility and hatred against innocent people who are living in the now.  It's time for us to prayerfully and quietly remember the lost and to work diligently toward creating a future without racial and religious hatred, a world in which another 9/11 won't happen.

Im not keen on muslims myself I don't like their policy to women or to infidels. There have been constant cases being brought to court in the Uk of bomb plots by radical muslims, the non radicals never seem to stand up and say this is wrong because they too are scared of radical islam.
To say lets all have a group hug and it will be fine is like putting you child in the King Herod babysitting club and then wondering why it ended up in the microwave. Islam is arabic for submission Im not a very submissive person these days.
I can never get the word verification thing to work

There are about a billion Muslims living peacefully in this world. What do you suggest-that we exterminate all of them?

There are interpretations of Koran scripture used to justify the position that infidels either convert or die. I don't for a second believe that the tiny faction that believes this will ever have sufficient control so that my kids and their kids are in peril.

But these tiny factions are a danger, they kill people. So we have to watch out for them.

I hope that Islam, which is essentially two or three centuries behind Christianity in development and maturity, grows up and learns to play nice. There was a time when if you told Aborigines, Maoris, Chinese, Indian sub-continent inhabitants, Amerinds, that the Christians were back again, they'd be very, very fretful. Muslims are at a stage where they take ghawd very, very personally.

Officially, there are approximately 1.2 billion Muslims in the world. That's second only to the 1.9 billion Christians.

i really loved the book "three cups of tea" and kids at my schoo are raising money to build a school using a similar organization. some of the kids are so selfish, that when they do something so nice, i don't know how to respond besides buying something from their bake sale that i don't need to eat.

Alex, i agree with you on the word thing. it always takes me several tries, i can't seem to read the letters correctly when they're all wavy and different sizes.

I know it's wrong, but I tend to judge Muslims by the ones (five) I know. Three are just delightful men . . funny and smart. Two are assholes. One told me in a haughty and condesending way, "America has no culture!" Wad. I said in my head, "Asshole then go back to Iran where you're from and make your living there, where your wife and three daughters live in submission and shit like that." What actually came out of my mouth was ths: "Then you need to get out of your gated community and your smelly cul-de-sac and travel around this country, Asshole."
I felt very restrained.

Christianity has learned to play nice? When did that happen? There are Christian groups that sound just as repressive as radical islamic groups. It's extremity in thought that's scary--because it ultimately leads to group thought and stupidity!

(on the word verification thinigie--try clicking on the little guy in the wheelchair)
