E-readers

I asked for an e-reader for Christmas, and after checking out all the options, Dave got me an iPad. He said it does so much more for the slightly larger investment that he couldn't justify buying another type of device. Anyway, as an e-reader, I love it! I've already downloaded and read two books, and am shopping for a third!

I wouldn't have believed it could be so "book-like" to read on an electronic screen! And I love the instant gratification--no drive to Borders, no waiting for Amazon.

With all that said, I can't see myself ever completely giving up real books. I hope books stay around forever.

As far as the iPad goes, I haven't tried to use any of its other functions other than reading. Where technology is concerned, I move slowly.

I highly recommend the Netflix app, where you can stream movies on the iPad. Great for the treadmill, etc. Also, Boggle. And if you ever join, Facebook.

my sisters, father and mother all have kindles. i messed around with one and liked it. i was impressed with the screen and how easy it was to use, but i agree, the ipad does so much more for only a small bit of money that it makes sense to get one or the new color nook or similar unit. my relatives were all shocked that i don't have an e reader yet b/c i read hundres of books a year, but i explained that i refuse to spend that kind of money on myself. if someone else spends it on me, i'd be happy, but i'm not the type of person to walk into a store and spend money on me like that. i'd never enjoy the unit b/c i'd sit and think of the new vacuum i should have bought instead. this is why i hate getting gift cards too. i'd rather someone get me clothing i hate with a gift receipt so i can change that in for a new outfit than cash or a gift card, b/c then i feel compelled to get my daughter or guy something instead of something for me.

as to books, i love the smell and feel of a book, but i no longer have the space for too many new books and i hate to be rid of them once i have them. i need to get new shelves for MissM's room b/c her shelf finally hit max capacity and erupted books all over the place the other day.

anyway, good luck falling in love with the ipad and keep us informed of all the little joys. this will help me start to beg for one for me. i've been nagging for a droid or iphone when it's time to get new phones in about 11.5 months. i love my chocolate, but i need access to a few apps that won't anymore on my chocolate.

i feel like a salmon swimming up stream when it comes to technology, and oftentimes, i feel like i should just give in and swim towards sea.

Sonya, I'm there. Look for me under my IRL name and friend me!

Jilly, you're sounding more like yourself. Thank you for the sweet card.

I received a Nook Color and was able to connect to my neighbor's unsecured network, but not my secured network. After hours of frustration, I took the damn thing back and bought a few more books. I thought the iPad would do more than I wanted it to although husband was quite willing to get me that. After I get over the stress and frustration I might look at an iPad in a year or two :). Sadly, or hysterically, I am totally serious. I am too old to let this crap get on my nerves!

Sheila, who knew it would be so freaking AWESOME to get old and not give a crap any more?

Personally, I love it!

I've resisted the e-reader temptation so far. I just love the feel and smell of books and I also "riffle" the pages while I read-hard to do with hardware.

However, that being said, my house is overflowing with books and I mean overflowing. Like Jilly, I can't seem to part with any of them (even the bad ones) although my aunt seems to think a yard book sale is one solution. I told her that my books are like my children and I couldn't sell them, could she sell one of her kids? She smartly answered that if she had as many kids as I had books, she sure would!

Anyway, Dennis always said our house is in no danger of blowing away in a hurricane since the weight of the books are holding it to the ground nicely. :)

And Sheila and Verb, old age is the time when you realize that what was so very important when you're younger no longer matters and it's a great relief!

Well, Verb, if we could remember your URL name (or have some clue how to find it), we'd friend you!

I've had a Nook for almost as long as Nook has existed and I love it. I have a deep meaningful relationship with it. I'm thinking about marrying it.

My friend, The Professor, refuses to even touch it. :-/ He says it's evil.

Sheila, please friend me too.

I haven't done the e-reader yet but I did audio books all the time when driving back and forth to Tahoe. When I'd find a book I liked, I'd go buy the actual book so you get the best of both worlds.

I'm trying to resist getting an iPad cuz I hate my iPhone.
