Last night's movie was The Sound of Music. We met CondorBlue and AforAllie there, and had a great time. It was good to see them, and they are both doing well. We had some laughs about the good old days of the Bookshelf, and Allie and I discussed how hard it is to try to explain to anyone how delightful it was--how much fun we had and how many laughs! It sounds lame and pitiful. But really, it wasn't (was it?)
The theater has a docent presentation before the movie begins, with interesting facts about the movie, how it is ranked by movie historians, etc. We were amused to hear that Christopher Plummer hated the film and later referred to it as "The Sound of Mucus." He said that filming with Julie Andrews was like being hit over the head with a big, flowery Valentine card every day. (However, the two remained good friends after the filming was over.)
The docent kindly reminded us NOT to sing along, so with effort, I restrained myself! It was tough, though!

I miss the old bookshelf...it's just not the same on FB or anything else I've found. Just think of the hours we spent talking about nothing (I think Jerry Seinfeld may owe us royalties) or earth shattering matters such as...well...er...you know.
Fond memories of the Bookshelf. Met some of the folks in real life. Read some books I likely would not have read without the recommendations of those present. Had lots of laughs, lots of "you must be kidding" moments. Talked with folks I felt to be relatively normal, and folks who showed so much pathology that I would NEVER want to meet them in RL. Because of the Bookshelf, I could truthfully say I never watched daytime TV- which is not to say I didn't waste time, just not on TV. I miss the Shelf as it was circa 1997-8 or so,,I still remember Jenn cautioning folks to watch their sexual references because Sheila222 was too young to hear such things,, and I was 43 at the time! Ha, I am laughing. I was so much younger then, I'm older than that now.
I think even Julie Andrews got fed up with her sugary persona. I've read that in real life she can be bawdy and can cuss with the best of them. Christopher Plummer was a beautiful man in his heyday. The character of Rolf always freaked me out. Five of the "children" were on the Joy Behar show a few months ago....all middle-aged now. Sigh.

I liked the cynicism of Wolfie from the Shelf--he was infatuated with Parker Posey. To this day I can't watch her in something without thinking of him
Speaking of strange folks...who was it that kept getting run over and killed by a truck every 3 months or so?
And whatever happened to LAX? I still laugh when I think about Gertie..she was some old broad herself :)
Gail,
I think that was Taters---she had nine lives
Taters-of course. Thanks Emma, have no idea how I could have forgotten her name. That was one mean bread truck :)
I miss the old bookshelf days too. I post on a dozen or so message boards, but it just doesn't seem to be the same.
That's so weird. I was driving somewhere yesterday and out of nowhere the Bookshelf popped into my head and I was wondering what happened to AforAllie; Bangstick and can't remember her name, the one who went to jail that he married; etc.
