I think I'm turning into Alex

I have conceived a late-in-life passion for ironing.  Several months ago, I bought a new ironing board, a pretty blue and white ironing board cover and a big, fancy Rowenta iron.  It generates so much steam that I'm always a little scared when I'm using it.  It's heavy, too, and between the steam and the weight of it, very little actually effort has to go into the ironing process.  I bought four pairs of linen pants for summer, and every week, I wash them, hang them to dry, and look forward to ironing them into amazing wrinkle-less-ness.  It's shockingly satisfying.

(Thanks for pointing me toward the Rowenta, Alex!)

I am jealous of your fancy iron... I could use something with a little more heft and steam... I enjoy ironing as well... it is a quiet pastime and recalls my duties as a child when my mother sprinkled all of dad's handkerchiefs, piled them on top of each other and rolled them up for me to iron... each square was carefully put out and crisply pressed flat then folded and ironed again for crisp edges.... later I worked up to the white work shirts he wore, but handkerchiefs were the start

I still have a root-beer bottle with one of those old metal sprinkler cork stoppers in it, but I don't sprinkle the laundry much anymore

I ended up inheriting the linen table cloth and napkins since I was the only ironer in the family. :)

Lori, I remember that my mom had a "sprinkling bag" in our extra fridge in the garage--a zippered vinyl bag full of damp, sprinkled clothes, ready to iron!

Hi Verbie,

I haven't ironed for about 15 years. But I like your feet picture!

while i don't fancy ironing, (although in winter when it is cold outside, a nice basket of clothes to be ironed is a cozy warm feeling)i do enjoy hanging laundry on the line. the smell of the fresh clothes brings me back to my childhood at my grandmas house and the smell of those fresh sheets and towels hanging in the sunshine.

P.S. thanks for including me in your blog email. i am enjoying it already.

You're channeling Brigit! Remember how she would wax poetic about ironing her table cloths?

Well if you have to channel a Shelfer, who better?

When an elderly relative died a few years back, I was given a big box of crap (known as a BOC or a BBOC in my family). In my BBOC was a little metal thing that looked like a hollow metal stick connected to a flat disc with holes in it. the stick was covered in cork and i had no idea wtf the thing was. An elderly friend told me that it was put into a glass bottle filled with starch water so you could sprinkle clothing to iron. My sprinkler was dated to late 1800s early 1900s. I was also given a cast iron that you heat on the stove, I think it went with the sprinkler. I am so glad that I was born when I was. Both of these items found a home with someone who wanted them. I haven't ironed in a few years and hope i don't have to ever again really.

Thanks for the link.

OOooo, Jess, you will believe this because it's that weird quirky thing we know so well, but I also purchased the Rowenta Steam Generator and accompanying uber ironing board this past year, after being in the Certified Non-Ironer's Club with Emma for 15 years. But this iron has changed my life.

Not only are our clothes ironed, but one day I went all totally OCD and ironed all of our dish cloths like my grandmother used to, then I ironed my grandson's briefs, all of our sheets (including the fitted ones) - and in an ironing frenzy, I went and got all of my tablecloths and napkins (we're talking tons of damask here) and did them all, too.

That's some iron.

Beth, Beth! GET A GRIP. There's passion, and then there's obsession.

(But I confess to ironing a goodly number of tablecloths in the last six months. :)

I iron on my bedroom floor, as I need things. I hate it.
I haven't used an ironing board since we moved here six years ago. I'm thinking I should switch irons!
